Redditch MP backs Governments controversial illegal immigration plan

THE LATEST controversial Government plan to tackle illegal immigration has been backed by Redditch MP Rachel Maclean.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak set out the five new steps the Government is taking to stop small boats crossing the Channel.

These include a new agreement with Albania so the vast majority of Albanian claimants can be removed, a new, permanent, unified Small Boats Operational Command in the channel and tougher immigration enforcement.

The Government is also planning, early next year, to introduce new legislation to make it clear that anyone entering the UK illegally should not be able to remain and, instead, be swiftly detained and removed.

Mrs Maclean said: “I strongly welcome the plan the Prime Minister has announced.

“It’s clear the Government has listened and has acted on my constituents’ legitimate anger over the unacceptable number of illegal Channel crossings.

“At every opportunity I have voted to take back control of our borders and for tougher measures to crackdown on illegal immigration.

“By taking these steps announced by the Prime Minister, we will be tough but fair, tackle illegal migration – and stop the boats.

Mrs Maclean has previously met with the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary to make the case for reform of the Modern Slavery Act which she believes is being used by illegal migrants to ‘game the system.’

She added: “We are a kind and compassionate country, but I’m afraid our hospitality is being abused by illegal migrants, many of whom originate from safe countries and travel through safe countries, who are preventing us from helping and supporting genuine refugees and asylum seekers.

“I’m pleased to see the Prime Minister has taken into account many of my suggestions for reform of the Modern Slavery Act, ensuring it protects and rescues genuine victims, rather than illegal migrants seeking to game the system.”
