Redditch MP Chris Bloore pays tribute to Veterans in his Westminster Diary

Redditch Editorial 10th May, 2025   0

THIS WEEK marks 80 years since Victory in Europe Day – a moment to remember a generation that stood tall when it mattered most.

Ordinary men and women who risked everything to defend our freedoms, defeat fascism and rebuild Britain from the ashes.

Here in Redditch, over 3,000 veterans are part of our community. They’re our neighbours, friends and family. They stood for us and now it’s our turn to stand for them.

Too many veterans still face real struggles when they leave the Armed Forces – from housing and jobs to mental health and finding their place in civilian life.

I’ve spoken to local veterans who’ve told me, heartbreakingly, they felt more supported in the Army than when they came home.

That’s not right and it never has been.

That’s why I’m proud to support VALOUR, a brand-new, £50million nationwide initiative that will give veterans in Redditch and beyond the support they deserve.

Proper, joined-up care – housing, health, employment and mental health services all working together, under one roof.

This builds on the great work already being done locally – like the brilliant Redditch Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, where veterans gather for a cuppa, camaraderie and community.

Or the work of our Armed Forces Champion, who works every day to make sure the council delivers on its duty to our heroes.

This VE Day, let’s live up to the values those who served fought for – dignity, decency and respect.

Let’s promise every veteran in Redditch and the Villages: you will never be forgotten and you will never be left behind.

They had our backs when bombs were falling and the lights went out.

Now, together, we’ve got theirs.
