Redditch MP says it was 'right decision' to cancel five-day festive plans

REDDITCH MP Rachel Maclean believes the government has made the ‘right decision’ to tear up its five-day festive bubble plans.

A huge U-turn earlier today saw Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancel Christmas festivities for many people up and down the country.

He scrapped plans to allow people to meet up with up to three other households over a five-day period, December 23 to 27, and instead shortened it to just one day – December 25.

So families in Redditch will now only be able to meet up on Christmas Day itself and are being told they cannot stay overnight into Boxing Day.

A Tier 4 was also introduced as part of the plans in certain areas of the country, including London, where people cannot mix indoors with anyone not from their household.

The PM said a new strain of Covid that’s ripping through London and the South is up to 70 per cent more contagious.

And the R rate has risen above one, nationally.

Mrs Maclean said: “The speed of spread of the new virus strain is very concerning, and rightly government is taking decisive action.

“Redditch is not one of the areas moving into Tier 4, we remain in Tier 2.

“But we must all continue to follow the rules and to keep each other safe.

“A difficult decision was also made about Christmas bubbles – I know many of you will be disappointed you can now only form a bubble with three households on Christmas Day, but I do believe this is the right decision.”
