Redditch MP's pledge following historic defeat of PM's Brexit deal

Correspondent 16th Jan, 2019

PRIME Minister Theresa May suffered a defeat of historic proportions when the House of Commons voted by 432 votes to 202 to defeat her Brexit deal by 230.

Redditch MP Rachel Maclean has consistently backed the PM over the deal and following the landmark decision to reject it she said this:

“While I’m disappointed with the outcome of last night’s vote, I stand by the decision I made to back this deal.

“I believed, and still do, that I was acting in the best interests of my constituents, my country and for my children’s future.

“I want to reassure my constituents, a majority of whom voted to leave the EU, that I am just as determined today, as I was when I was first elected in 2017, to deliver Brexit.

“It’s clear from what I’ve seen during my time representing you in the House of Commons that there will now be attempts by MPs to try and thwart Brexit. I will not tolerate these manoeuvres to overturn the will of my constituents and of the country.

“The Government must continue to work to deliver Brexit, and I will continue to support them in this endeavour.

“As the Government continues this work, so to should it prepare for every outcome. Preparations for no deal must be escalated and ramped up ahead of our exit from the EU on March 29.

“As the Prime Minister said in the House of Commons following the result, the Government will come back to Parliament on or before next Monday to set-out what it intends to do next.

“The Prime Minister struck the right tone in her response to the result. I continue to believe the Prime Minister is the right person for the job and I will be supporting her Government in tomorrow’s vote of no confidence.

“Be in no doubt, whatever happens next, the UK will still be leaving the EU on March 29th, deal or no deal.”
