Redditch mum outraged after being left with 'dangerous' sharps bin for 18 months

A REDDITCH mum is outraged after being left with a ‘dangerous’ sharps bin in her home for 18 months.

Kaleigh Lanham has a blood clotting disorder which affects her when she is pregnant.

She said: “During my last pregnancy I had to take daily injections and deal with gestational diabetes.

“I was prescribed all injections I needed and sharps bin.

“My baby is now 20 months old and I still have two giant sharps bins full of needles in my house.”

She claims she has tried every pharmacy in Redditch and not one would collect the bins

“The bins were given to me by my GP, but the doctors, every pharmacy in Redditch, multiple hospitals across the county and the council will not take these sharps bins.

“My husband is an engineer who regularly works in hospitals and he takes them with him to work whenever he has a job in a hospital and no one will take them.”

The NHS states on its website arrangements for disposing of full sharps bins varies from area to area and suggests for people using needles at home their council may be responsible for collecting them.

It added some charged but most did not.

But Kaleigh said she had no luck from Redditch Borough Council.

She added: “I called the council again and was met with the most rude woman on the other end of the phone.

“After explaining my situation she just kept repeating ‘we do no collect these, we do not collect these’.

“I was asking for advice and she said nothing but that sentence after everyone of my questions.

“I’ve had enough and I just want these bins out of my house.”

A NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire spokesperson said: “Local authorities are responsible for the collection of household medical sharps.

“In Redditch there are arrangements in place for patients to return these in 1-litre sharps boxes to designated community pharmacies.

“We are currently working with our partners in the council to widen the scope of this service to match the needs of our patients.”

The council confirmed to the Standard it did not collect sharps bins.
