A REDDITCH mum-of-two claims she fears for the health of her children as her council flat is plagued with damp and has mushrooms growing on the walls.
Lucy Webb, who lives in Evesham Mews with her husband and two young children, is calling for Redditch Borough Council to act upon her pleas of help to improve their living conditions.
The family has been living with damp, dripping walls, caused by a leak from the balcony above their flat, for almost a year and Lucy is now concerned it is affecting both her and her baby’s health.
Both she and her eight-month-old daughter suffer from asthma and breathing problems and she believes the damp conditions, which have resulted in large areas of mould and most recently small mushrooms growing through the walls, could be making them worse.
Lucy said: “They have advised me to just clean the mould off and wipe the mushrooms away with a cloth, but it’s not going to solve the problem.
“It’s really starting to get me down and some days I’d rather go anywhere than be in that damp, dripping flat.
“It can’t be good for the children’s health either, and I really think we should be somewhere that is at the very least, warm and dry. It’s not much to ask for.”
Lucy and her mother Anne have been in touch with the council multiple times, pleading for them to fix the problem, but as yet, she feels nothing significant has been done to fix the problem.
“I don’t want my family to have to live in these conditions anymore,” said Lucy. “They’ve got to do something.”
The family also said the damp, which is coming through their living room wall, has in the past affected the electrics in the house, making them very cautious about using electrical items around the children.
A council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the problem which stems from water penetration via the balcony.
“The job for the rectification works have been given to one of our contractors but there has been a delay because a specialist sub-contractor is required to carry out the works.
“We believe that discussions are taking place between the sub-contractors, a neighbouring property and Mrs Webb to rectify this as soon as possible.”
