TWO MEN from Alvechurch are driving 3,500km across India in a tuk tuk to raise cash for charity.
With the combined age of 123, the ‘two old tuckers’ will be travelling through deserts and mountains to raise money for Smile Train.
Trevor Woolley and Malcolm Douglas are taking part in The Adventurists Rickshaw Run, a 3,500km race from Shillong, in North East India to Fort Kochi, near the southern tip.
Smile Train is the world’s largest cleft lip and palate charity, which deploys trained surgeons into lower-income counties and teaches the necessary surgeries.
The work it does allows a continuous cycle of new surgeons to be able to perform the surgeries to those who need them.
They decided to raise money for the charity after watching an advert on TV, feeling it was “a very important charity, especially in developing countries.”
The race will take roughly two weeks and begins in April.
Trevor and Malcolm are aiming to raise a total of £1,000 and will be updating people on their adventure via ‘Two Old Tukkers’ on facebook.
Trevor said he was “really looking foward to it – it will be a hell of a laugh if we make it.”
As well as riding across India in a three wheeled tuk tuk, Trevor and Malcolm will face the challenges of repairing their rickshaw, navigating complex routes, and securing food and shelter along the way.
With their hearts set on making a difference, Trevor and Malcolm aim to raise £500 for Smile Train UK through their participation in the Rickshaw Run as well as £500 for Cool Earth.
Cool Earth are the charity which The Adventurists raise money for. The charity works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction.
