Redditch pensioner thanks police for their help during snow and ice

A REDDITCH pensioner has praised the police for helping her and her friend in the ice and snow.

Ann Bourk, 70, from Batchley, became concerned for the well-being of her 80-year-old friend last week when she could not get through to him on his mobile phone or landline.

“He always comes for dinner but on Tuesday, as we knew the snow was forecast, he took some food back with him because he thought he may not be able to make it over.

“I tried to call him on Wednesday to see if he was okay but he did not pick up and the same thing happened on Thursday and Friday.”

Getting increasingly concerned Ann called Lifeline to see if someone could go and check on him but was told the service could only respond if the person themself made the call.

“I was so worried, he had major surgery last year for pancreatic cancer. I called the police and had such a lovely response from them.

“Even though it is not really their job, they recognised that with the snow it was not an ordinary situation and came to help.”

The officers not only went around to Ann’s house to pick up the keys so they could check on her friend, they also took some bread, soup and biscuits round to him and then dropped the keys back.

“You hear some people running down the police but they do a fantastic job taking care of us.

“They were proper gentlemen and really helpful.

“I can’t thank them enough.”
