THE TOWN’S so-called ‘boy-racers’ are inviting all residents, car enthusiast or not, to join them in a fund-raising event for West Midlands Air Ambulance.
‘Speed Freakz’, a local bike group, and Underground Cruisers, a group of car enthusiasts, will host the event on Sunday (March 20) at Washford Industrial Estate, on Hemming Road, from 2pm.
A number of vehicles – some modified – will be on display.
It’s a cause close to the groups’ hearts after a younger brother of Speed Freakz member Ashley Woodfield was airlifted to hospital after an incident.
And the clubs hope to not only raise funds for the Air Ambulance but to spread awareness that Redditch’s ‘boy racers’ do a lot more than just drive fast around town, having already raised £650 for the brain injury unit at Leamington.
“Young people involved in these kind of groups quite often get a bad name but this a reminder that we are not all bad and we actually do some good things,” said Ashley.
“I want to use the fund-raiser as an opportunity to say thank you to the Air Ambulance on behalf of the family for being heroes that day.”
The groups also hope to remind residents about the potential dangers of motorcycle and car accidents as the weather warms up for summer.
Michelle McCracken, fund-raising officer for West Midlands Air Ambulance, said: “Each mission we go on costs £2,500 and last year we airlifted 106 bikers in the West Midlands.
“We could only airlift those bikers and everyone else because of the generosity of people like these guys.”
All car and bike enthusiasts are invited to go along – with their vehicle – where a donation of any amount can be made on arrival.
