Redditch police crack down on HGV crime

Redditch Editorial 21st Nov, 2016 Updated: 21st Nov, 2016   0

REDDITCH police are cracking down on thefts from HGVs in the run up to Christmas.

With more goods being transported on motorways and major A roads than at any other time of the year, as well as restrictions on drivers’ hours meaning HGVs are often parked up overnight, it leaves them and their vehicles vulnerable to theft and traditionally leads to an increase in this particular area of crime.

As part of Operation Axle, patrols around motorway service areas, truck stops, lay bys and other areas that lorry drivers stop at will be stepped up in the evenings and early mornings during December and January.

The main objective of the operation is to try and deter potential thieves, reduce the number of thefts and provide reassurance to HGV drivers.

Detective Inspector Steven Fitzpatrick said: “The festive period can be a wonderful time of year but it is also one when HGVs and their drivers can become targets for opportunist thieves.

“We will be doing all we can to ensure that is not the case by increasing our presence in areas where HGV drivers typically spend time overnight.

“Our officers will be carrying out a number of patrols over the coming weeks in a bid to prevent thefts from occurring as well reassuring drivers and providing crime prevention advice.

“We hope Operation Axle will help keep the festive season safe for all those who are using our roads.”

Officers are also issuing the following advice to drivers:

-always secure your vehicle when you leave it – locking and setting alarms

-always keep your keys with you – never leave them in the cab

-lock the trailer load doors while driving and lock your cab when loading or unloading

-plan your route before you start your journey

-avoid taking the same routes or stops for breaks as a recognisable pattern makes you an easier target for criminals

-report any irregularity in loading, locking or sealing of your load or with documents

-do not talk openly about what you’re transporting or where you are going

-do not leave your personal property on view in the cab

Operation Axle is set to begin on today (Monday, November 21) and continue through until the end of January.
