A TERRIFYING event had a happy ending for one senior citizen when local police officers rallied round after she had £300 stolen from her purse.

The theft happened at 5.10pm on May 20 on Mount Pleasant when a ‘good samaritan’ offered to carry the bag of the woman, who is in her 90s.

He reached in, grabbed the cash and then ran for it.

The case touched the hearts of local beat bobbies who, together with a contribution from the police community fund, raised enough to replace the stolen sum and present it with a bouquet of flowers.

“The victim said to me about our officers – ‘They are amazing, they need commending’ ,” said Sgt Karl Pierpoint.

“Because of their actions she still feels safe even after this incident walking in the area and feels safe due to us.”

However he added that the case reinforced the message that people need to be aware when out and about.

“If people require crime prevention advice they can contact our Safer Neighbourhood team directly on the website,” he added.
