THE SOUNDS of jazz, the spray of splurge guns and the spirit of the Roaring 20s will take over St Augustine’s Catholic High School in Redditch next week.

In a spectacular celebration of talent and school history, the students will present their production of the classic musical Bugsy Malone.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the original 1976 film, and St Augustine’s is pulling out all the stops to honour that legacy.

Set in 1920s New York, the show follows the rivalry between two gang bosses, Fat Sam and Dandy Dan, while the titular Bugsy Malone tries to win the heart of the aspiring starlet, Blousey Brown.

This is the school’s 20th annual production and, alongside Bugsy Malone, it has staged classic shows such as Oliver, Fame, Grease, Return to the Forbidden Planet, School of Rock, Little Shop of Horrors, Into the Woods and Sister Act.

Headteacher Luke Payton said the stage provided lessons not always found in a textbook.

“The performing arts are central to our mission of developing the whole child.

“Beyond the incredible entertainment value, these productions build confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging.

“In the 50th anniversary year of this iconic story, seeing our students collaborate and shine on stage is a testament to the dedication we foster here at St Augustine’s.”

The production features a massive cast and crew, from lead actors perfecting their Bronx accents to the technical team managing the infamous splurge effects.

Under the guidance of the school’s performing arts department, students have spent months rehearsing complex choreography and classic songs including ‘Bad Guys’ and ‘You Give a Little Love’.

Dr Chris Long, director of Performing Arts, who has overseen the production, said: “Bugsy Malone is the ultimate ensemble piece.

“It requires sharp comedic timing and immense energy.

“Celebrating the film’s 50th anniversary with this particular group of students has been a joy – they have embraced the ‘speakeasy’ style with such professionalism.

“It’s a high-octane show that truly showcases the depth of talent we have in Redditch.”

The show runs at 7pm on January 20, 21, and 22 at St Augustine’s Catholic High School Theatre.
