Redditch PureGym has reopened after being shut by police

REDDITCH PureGym has reopened today after being forced to close on the weekend.

Police ordered the Kingfisher Shopping Centre gym to close for two days on Saturday, January 2 when it became apparent it was being used by people outside of the tier 3 town.

Gyms and leisure facilities in tier 4 areas, such as in neighbouring Studley and Birmingham, are closed but can remain open in lower tiers.

People from tier 4 areas were said to be exploiting a ‘loophole’ and gaining access by signing up with false home addresses.

Before it reopened today, the Standard was still able to sign up to the Redditch gym via its website.

Customers, who also signed up after its closure, were left infuriated on social media as their money was still being taken.

A PureGym spokesperson said: “Credit will be used for access after the gym reopens.

“People need to stick by their local tier rules. We are taking extra steps to prevent this happening and communicating with affected members over email.

“We recognise our role in helping; we are stopping day passes at certain branches, blocking multi-access for tier 4 members and working with police.”
