Redditch residents bring in the cash at Macmillan Coffee morning

A MACMILLAN coffee morning in Redditch has been hailed a great success.

Staff, volunteers and cancer survivors joined together to raise cash for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning at the Abbey Stadium last Friday.

Representatives from Macmillan Cancer Support joined in the fun, as well as nurses from Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust, who were offering free healthcare checks at the mobile health bus.

Macmillan volunteer June Jacombs said: “This is the first time we have held a coffee morning at the Abbey Stadium and the response has been brilliant. To have people coming over before I had even set up the table was fantastic.”

Leader of Redditch Borough council, Coun Joe Baker was there to show his support, and paid tribute to the nurses at Macmillian who looked after his mum.

“It’s always good to support health and wellbeing and Macmillan Cancer Support. They helped my mum when she had stage four cancer and for that I will always be grateful.

“As well as the coffee morning, it was about getting people down to the Abbey Stadium to showcase what we have got here. It’s always important to help people improve their health and wellbeing and, most importantly, get them more active.”

Coun Bill Hartnett added: “Macmillan do an excellent job – they are the unsung heroes of the community.

“Most of the cakes have been donated and, with the health bus here, it’s an ideal time for people to get checked and show the love we have for the NHS.

“Days like this also show Redditch’s generosity and community spirit – which we have in abundance.”

Megan Altindas, a wellbeing coach for Healthy Worcestershire, said: “It was a really good turn-out and we had a lot of interest.

“The funding only started three months ago and we are here to encourage health and wellbeing engagement and get people involved in more activities, along with giving advice on lifestyles and nutrition.”
