A BURST water main in Winyates Green yesterday (Thursday) left residents desperate to protect their homes from being flooded.
The pipes, which are run by Severn Trent, were pouring water on to Dursley Lane and Lindridge Close from about 1pm with such force it lifted the pavement. One homeowner, Eileen Marsh was trying to sweep the stream away from the houses after seeing how an elderly neighbour’s garden and garaged were completely covered. The rest of the estate was left without any water while waiting for the company to send someone to solve the problem.
She said: “I’m doing my best to try and keep the water away and salvage what I can. My neighbour is nearly 80-years-old and when he gets home he is going to be so upset. His whole garage is filled with water. It is going to be devastating for him.
“Some of the others have so much water in their garages their washing machines and dryers are flooded.”
Severn Trent arrived, dug a hole and blocked off part of one garden to feed the tide down the hill. At 3pm Eileen and her neighbours were still waiting for another staff member to come and fix the problem.
Louise Reddington-Blyth lives on Newent Close and got home from work to find the water had flooded her greenhouse.
“I just opened the door and couldn’t believe how much water was coming down the neighbour’s garden so i ran round to see what on earth had happened.
“The furniture in my greenhouse is ruined and I am frightened to open my garage door.”
A spokesperson for Severn Trent said: “We received reports of a burst water pipe on Dursley Lane, Redditch, which may be causing water supplies to be off or at low pressure for some of our customers in the area. Our teams went out immediately and are now working to fix the pipe and get everything back to normal as quickly as possible.”
He said the road would have to be closed while the work party repaired the damage.
