Redditch residents set up campaign to fight demolition of library

Redditch Editorial 2nd Feb, 2023   0

CONCERNED Redditch residents have set up a campaign to fight the demolition of Redditch Library.

The campaign has grown out of the strong opposition to Redditch Borough Council’s plan to move library services into the Town Hall to create a square and coffee shops on the prime centrally-located library site.

Hands Off Redditch Library is a politically-neutral campaign for supporters of any political party.

A spokesperson from the group said: “The campaign isn’t against the regeneration of the town centre but supporters believe this work can be carried out without moving the county’s second most-used library out of its purpose-built, prominent facility.

“Hands Off Redditch Library has also received interest from national charity, The Library Campaign.

“The town regeneration planners are concerned with money, but have completely overlooked the importance of having a stand-alone, purpose-built library as part of a thriving and vibrant town centre.

“After a recent £1m internal refurbishment, the library only needs a little external modernisation.

“This could be achieved for a fraction of the £9.4m projected relocation cost! It is crucial that the public makes its voice heard before February 24.”

Redditch Library is very well-used and opposition to the demolition plans has been steadily rising since the proposals were put forward.

Worcestershire County Council is holding a public consultation period until February 24.

Hands Off Redditch Library is urging all residents to take part in the survey by searching ‘Redditch Library consultation’ online or asking for a paper copy at Redditch Library.
