Redditch residents take climate change campaign to Paris

REDDITCH residents have taken their battle against climate change to Paris to campaign to world leaders.

Jim Quinn and Jane Lavery travelled to France on Wednesday (December 9) to see representatives from 190 countries gather to discuss an international climate change agreement.

The retired town planner and head teacher made the trip in response to a letter from Pope Francis, addressed to the world, calling for everyone to care for ‘our common home’ in particular because of the impact climate change has on people living in poverty. The two travelled for the end of the talks with Catholic aid agency CAFOD to call for an ambitious and fair agreement.

Jim said: “Being in Paris strengthened our commitment to change, our prayers for change and our knowledge of why change is necessary. It was worth the train fare.

“When I met with Karen Lumley MP in October to discuss climate change she said she believed the science and that her postbag had increased on the subject.

“Some of the people I spoke to in Paris were praising our Government’s international position on climate change but felt its policies in the UK were undermining this. I hope Karen will now do her bit to achieve joined up action in Government to reduce UK emissions.”

An agreements was signed on Saturday (December 12) in which global governments recognised the need keep global warming below 1.50C and to help developing countries cope with its effects.
