Redditch rocked by a new craze

AN UNUSUAL project aimed at getting families outside and enjoying time together has seen a rock-solid response from the Redditch community.

Redditch Rocks – a project that invites people to decorate and hide stones and pebbles around the town, parks and woodlands – has seen a surge in participants, with colourful stones appearing all over the place.

The Facebook page – Redditch Rocks – was set up just around three months ago and has already attracted more than 700 members.

Linda Magner, who runs the page, said: “It’s about getting families spending time together, having a bit of fun – and it’s something anyone can do because it doesn’t cost anything to join in.

“We’ve had some amazingly creative design shared on the group page and we saw a real peak in interest during half term, so it’s something that kids are obviously enjoying doing.”

The rules are simple – find a rock or pebble, and paint it with something – whether a pattern, picture, cartoon or quote – and then leave it to be found by others, such as in a park or woodland.

Finders can either keep the rock, replace it with one of their own, or move them to somewhere else and share their finds on social media.

The theme for the painting is usually left open, but people in Redditch are being encouraged to paint poppies in the run up to Remembrance day in memory of soldiers who have been lost to war.

It is believed the rock-painting craze started in America, with The Kindness Rocks Project credited with beginning the movement.
