REDDITCH Rotarians took to the skies over Germany on Monday when they were joined by former Lancaster bomber pilot John Quine.
Mr Quine, now in his 90s but still sharp and driving, trained in Spitfires during the Second World War but transferred to Bomber Command and the Lancaster.
After leaving the RAF he kept up his flying after buying two small aircraft, one of which was kept in a hangar at Birmingham Airport.
Rotarians also heard that a Birmingham-built Lancaster, made at the old Austin Works at Longbridge, could be taking to the skies again in 2020.
‘Just Jane’, built in 1945, was completed too late to see action and is currently undergoing a £3.5million restoration after a life with the French Naval air arm.
Both men and women are welcome to join Redditch Rotarians who meet weekly at Monday lunchtimes at the Abbey Hotel in Hither Green Lane.
