Redditch Rotary campaigning for funds to build mobile eye surgery facility

Redditch Editorial 10th Jan, 2023   0

REDDITCH Rotary club is joining forces with a fellow Rotary club in Eastern India to raise funds to establish a mobile eye surgery facility that will be based in Cuttack, Odisha.

The project was initiated by club member and previous club President Bichitra Das and has now been taken on by current President Mike Luck.

Das is a consultant ophthalmologist operating in Birmingham and Bromsgrove and has first hand experience of the poor eye health that would otherwise prevail.

He said: “Diabetic Retinopathy and ctaracts are the common cause of sight loss, but can easily be treated with early diagnosis.

“This mobile unit will be managed by the Rotary club of Cuttack and will be able to reach far more patients than a traditional hospital facility.”

Current Redditch club president Mike Luck has taken on the challenge to reach a target of £8,000 while the same contribution will be matched by the Rotary club of Cuttack.

The funds will be raised through a number of events put on by the Redditch club together with a JustGiving page.

The total raised by the two clubs will then be boosted by a significant contribution from Rotary International, based in Alcester, via their International Foundation Grant scheme.

President Mike Luck added: “This is a great example of how Rotary can join forces to significantly change lives for the better.

“We have made numerous contributions to local and national charities and I’m proud to now be part of a major international project with the club.”
