BIG HEARTED supporters and members of Redditch Rotary Club have appealed for more help in their battle to combat a preventable eye disease that causes blindness.
The Rotary International campaign, is focused on sufferers in East India and was launched earlier this year.
Already £3,000 has been raised but Redditch eye surgeon and former president of the local Rotarians, Bichitra
Das, said a further £5,000 was needed to achieve their target.
“There is a high incidence of blindness from retinal and vitreous haemorrhage due to two conditions,” he said.
“The cause is not known and is most likely due to tuberculosis.
“Patients are still going blind due to retinal and vitreous haemorrhage.”
Mr Das who has worked in hospitals across the West Midlands, including Redditch, said the solution was Argon Laser treatment available through mobile units.
Each fully equipped van will cost £55,000 and Redditch Rotarians have set themselves a target of raising £8,000 which will be matched by a Rotary Foundation grant, with Rotary Clubs in Eastern India also involved.
People can make donations to the Rotary Club of Redditch’s charity account at Lloyds Bank, sort code 309897, acc. no. 69771968.
All money raised will go to the campaign.
