Redditch school launches new scheme to increase pupil safety

A REDDITCH school has launched a new scheme to increase the safety of children at pick up times after a child was nearly run over by a car reversing into the school entrance.

Headteacher of St Thomas More in Woodrow Mrs Rooney reached out to Coun Emma Marshall for help and the idea of the little people signs were born.

The signs are in the shape of children to warn parents of the danger of irresponsible driving around the school gates.

Coun Marshall was able to utilise divisional funding to pay for two pavement signs which can be used during the school runs to increase safety.

She said: “I am really happy to have been able to help make the school run that bit safer for students here.

“These little people not only serve as a great reminder to drivers but also look so smart in their matching school uniform.”

Mrs Rooney said: “We as a school have worked extremely hard over the last 18 months to improve the safety of our site and surrounding area.

“Something we have struggled with is the parking around the front of the school gates and people turning their cars where children need to cross to enter school from the Woodrow Centre.

“Many of our children live in the centre and it is their only access to school in the morning.

“We are proud of how they look, as smart as our own children in their uniforms and hope that drivers will all think of our children when they drive and park.”
