Redditch schoolboy raises over £300 in memory of his mum

A REDDITCH schoolboy has raised more than £300 for St Richard’s Hospice in memory of his mum.

James Deaves was inspired to start the fund-raiser after his scout group encouraged him to complete his Scouts Personal Challenge Award.

James baked a huge batch of his mum’s favourite cake – lemon drizzle – and sold them to family and friends.

To make the cakes James used 90 eggs, six kilos of caster sugar, six kilos of flour, 22 blocks of butter and 30 lemons.

James took on his big bake on one day last month, starting at 6am and then delivering the fresh cakes to 25 customers with his dad Antony Deaves.

Antony said: “The children lost their mum to secondary breast cancer in December 2015 – she was 37.

“The support and care St Richard’s gave her was second to none.

“We are thankful that Helen was made as comfortable as possible with the support of St Richard’s staff.”

James’ scout leader, Sallie-Ann Eaton, said: “ We are all so very proud of James.

“He is an inspiration to our other scouts.

“He really went above and beyond to achieve the target he set himself and I will be very happy to present him with his award.”
