Redditch Scouts get creative at The Shed

Redditch Editorial 27th Dec, 2022   0

YOUNG people from 1st Redditch Scouts have been working with volunteers from a loneliness charity to give the members real life community experience.

Redditch Community Shed on St Georges Walk works to combat loneliness and isolation by giving people a safe space to make things, meet new people and chat in a supportive environment.

Sallie-Ann Eaton, Group Scout Leader, established the link with the community group pre-Covid with a view to giving the Scouts some real life experience, creating wooden items as a team for their Scout Hut.

In collaboration with volunteers from the Shed, three projects were defined and each scout had two weeks with their group to create the items.

The creations range from a giant Connect4 game the whole Scout group can use during their weekly sessions to a new sign for the gates outside the Scout Hut and finishing with some new Christmas themed decorations.

Sallie-Ann said: “Scouts were shown the plans, coached to develop their skills and expertly supported throughout – the volunteers were really fantastic with them.

“The Scouts are really proud of what they have created, as am I.

“They have really enjoyed learning the new skills and as a bonus, all got their Scout Model Maker badge to boot.”

Redditch Community Shed is open to all ages of men and women from all walks of life, offering woodworking, crafts and companionship.

They welcome new individuals to come down Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am until 2pm.
