A REDDITCH self defence teacher has reached the final of a community award scheme.

Pete Martin from the Redditch Self Defence Association has been nominated for the BBC’s ‘Make A Difference’ awards for raising awareness of knife crime.

The awards recognise remarkable people; marking their achievements and contributions to lives in their communities.

‘Make A Difference’ was first set up at the start of the first pandemic lockdown and is a virtual notice board for those offering help and those needing support.

Categories cover the unsung heroes of every community from great neighbours, inspirational teachers, awesome volunteers or even outstanding key workers.

Pete has been nominated for the Together award for work bringing the community together for a common cause.

The winners will be announced at the Make a Difference awards hosted by BBC Hereford and Worcester station at a ceremony in September at West Midlands Safari Park. Pete said: “Being nominated is very humbling and will be fabulous for raising awareness of knife crime and our group.

“Whether we win or not I am very grateful to be nominated.

“By the end of 2022, I will have spoken to over 25,000 young people about knife crime and provided hundreds of free positive activity’s in schools.”
