A REDDITCH singer has ‘struck gold’ after his band’s song was used by the Super Bowl chasing San Francisco 49ers NFL franchise.
‘Gathering of Strangers’ recorded the song ‘Red and Gold’ in 2022 and, afterwards, lead singer Conor Rabone contacted the San Francisco 49ers – as their team colours are red and gold – to ask if they wanted to walk out to their song.
Conor said: “We didn’t expect to hear anything back off the team, but were really surprised when they contacted us and said they loved the song.”
The track was then played at every game the San Francisco 49ers played at home at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara.
Connor added: “It was mental, the stadium holds 70,000 people, and to have our song played in front of that many people was incredible.
“We’ve now got fans who are American, and everyone sings to our song when the players walk out onto the pitch.”
Super Bowl hopes
The San Francisco 49ers face the Detroit Lions on Sunday (January 28) in the NFC Championship game. Should they win, the 49ers will advance to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas on February 11.
“If they get through to the final, the team have said they will play Red and Gold as they walk out,” Conor said.
The 2023 Super Bowl was watched by 115.1million people – the second most watched sporting event in the world. Conor said himself and the band were looking forward to the game this weekend.
“We’ve been watching the matches and have built up a really good relationship with the team. We’re hoping to get out to America for the next season and perform it live.”
The band has nearly 17,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone, and are hoping this exposure will boost them further.
Conor added: “I work at Thomas Brothers funeral directors and play in the band on the side, but it would be great if this opportunity took us to new heights.”

As well as singer Conor, Gathering of Strangers is made up of Tom (guitar), Pete (drums), Bruce (keys and bass) and Andre (guitar and bass).
