Redditch sisters put their hearts and home into art sale

TWO big-hearted sisters – aged just four and six – have raised more than £700 for the Anthony Nolan Trust after turning their home into an art gallery and selling their paintings.

And with the money still rolling in their proud by slightly stunned dad Spencer Gregg is hopeful they’ll be able to smash the £800 barrier.

“It’s been utterly overwhelming – we set a conservative target of £100 but we never ever imagined it would get to this stage,” he said.

Mia, aged six, and Mollie May, four, pulled out the paint and paper when they saw how upset their mum Michelle was at the death of her friend, local schoolteacher Josie Moss, who passed away from leukaemia.

“The art sale was Mia’s idea but both girls really went for it, turning our house into an art gallery,” said Spencer.

“They spent almost their entire Easter holiday doing paintings; they named each one and hung on the walls.”

And last Sunday the doors of their Birmingham Road home were thrown open and the public were invited in to browse, have a cuppa and a cake and hopefully buy a unique piece of art.

More than 100 people turned up and paintings started to fly off the walls.

One of the first through the door was borough Mayor Councillor Pattie Hill, who spent half an hour with the girls, made a donation and snapped up a Christmas decoration handmade by Mia.

The Mayor Coun Hill said: “I read the article about the sale on the Redditch Standard website and decided I had to go and meet these girls, so I took pot luck and turned up.

“I found them to be two charming, talented, wonderful, big-hearted girls who absolutely epitomise Redditch – what they have done is incredible.”

The girls also received a message of support from the Anthony Nolan Trust and all the money raised will join the amount raised by runner Deborah Cooper, another friend of Josie’s, who is tackling the London Marathon for the same cause.
