Redditch Snowdrop Festival bring hundreds to smell the flowers

VISITORS to St Leonard’s Church in Beoley last weekend got the chance to see more than just the first snowdrops of Spring.

As part of the annual Snowdrop Weekend Festival, guests were invited to learn about the history of the church bells before having a go at ‘chiming’ with expert ringers.

Several hundred guests enjoyed the carpet of white blooms and were treated to small pockets of daffodils and other spring flowers scattered among the graves thanks to the recent warmer weather.

Inside the church there were collections of church records for those who wanted to follow up their family history as well as a quiz allowing guests to explore the historic church, which traces its origins back to the 12th century.

Visitors also enjoyed a display by the Junior and Messy Church and a treasure hunt around the church and its grounds.

Mayor of Redditch Councillor Pattie Hill was also in attendance, presenting prizes and certificates for the Children’s Poetry Competition – Harriet Irving and Megan Beaman from Moons Moat First School.

Due to the interest in ‘chiming’, the church’s bell ringers are arranging a special session for those who would like to learn the art.

Anyone interested should contact the tower captain, Robin Simmons, on 01527 584399.
