Redditch student Texas is a community star

A REDDITCH student has been crowned the ‘Shining Community Star’ at the national Dyslexia Awards.

Texas Bishop, who has dyslexia and cerebral palsy, won the accolade on September 24 due to all the time and work he has invested in the community.

The award recognised the work he has done for young adults with special needs at the Redditch Youth Community Enterprise, the volunteering he undertakes at the Oasis Charity Shop in Redditch and his work during the pandemic where he worked as a Covid marshal supporting people within the local community.

He said: “I’m really happy to win this award – it just goes to show that being in a wheelchair does not stop you from achieving things if you have the right support around you.

“I’m very lucky to have such a supportive family who help me to succeed in the things I want.”

The ceremony was held at the Enginuity Interactive Museum in Coalbrookdale, with more than 100 guests present and others live streaming the event across the country.

Elizabeth Wilkinson MBE, the founder of the awards, said: “It is fabulous to hear so many stories of dyslexic people putting their stamp on the world, as well as the heart-warming stories of the tutors, teachers and support staff who empower and encourage success.

“Dyslexic people can and do achieve amazing things, and I am delighted that Texas has been recognised by the judges for his selfless, kind, caring and, above all, positive attitude towards life.”
