Redditch swimmers 'faster than HS2' to smash fund raising target

BRIILIANT Redditch Swimming Club members, challenged with swimmng 42 miles in less than two hours – the equalivent of crossing the English Channel there and back – shattered their target by completing an amazing 115 miles instead.

The aim of the exercise last Sunday (September 6) was to raise £1,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital but with donations pouring in the estimate is over £1,400 will be brought in with the first £1,000 match funded by Wesleyan Asssurance.

“The club smashed their distance target. In one hour 45 minutes 44 swimmers completed 7,375 lengths of the Abbey Stadium pool, equal to 115 miles.

“That’s the same distance as Redditch to London in less time than satnav says it would take to drive down the M40. Who needs High Speed 2? You just need to get your swim suit on!” said Paul Hartland, the club’s deputy chairman.

Swimmers from as young as nine to some more senior members of the squad, all contributed to the target with 28 swimmers completing a grueling 5km (200 lengths) each.

Even a new member aged nine years completed a staggering 65 lengths of the pool.

The event was then rounded off with a picnic and games for the swimmers and parents in the grounds of Abbey Stadium.
