A REDDITCH boxer is celebrating after becoming the William Wallace Cup Schoolboy Featherweight Champion.

Jake Mander trains at Redditch Amateur Boxing Club under Carl Warlton and Gary Blower.

The 14-year-old journeyed up to Sterling in Scotland last weekend for the competition.

He successfully won his bouts in the semi-final and final to win the title.

His dad Brett said: “He has trained so hard – every single day for the past four weeks, put himself on a strict diet and cut out sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks.

“We’re so happy all the hard work paid off.”

The fighter he defeated in the final was the reigning champion and was the ‘golden gloves’ holder in Scotland meaning he was ranked number one for his age and weight.

Brett added: “Jake previously lost in the West Midlands championships semi-final on a very controversial split decision.

“After that fight he wanted a rematch and beat his opponent that time.

“It shows how determined he is to get to the top.”
