Redditch United unveil Tom Rankin memorial

Redditch Editorial 21st Mar, 2023   0

REDDITCH United have unveiled a permanent memorial in memory of former player Tom Rankin at their Trico Stadium home, almost one year on from the midfielder’s tragic death.

Rankin died on March 27 last year, the day after Redditch played AFC Rushden and Diamonds in a home game.

And prior to their home match with Rushden at the Trico Stadium last weekend, Redditch chairman David Faulkner and Tom’s dad Bob unveiled the memorial in front of a teary crowd.

The memorial pictures Tom with his arms held aloft in celebration with the words ‘Always a Red and forever in our hearts’ inscribed beneath.

And the club were also raising money for The Kaleidoscope Plus Group who provide mental health support to thousands of people across the United Kingdom.

Players and supporters came together for a minute’s applause immediately before the match kicked off whilst fans chanted his name in the eighth minute in recognition of the shirt number he wore for the club.

Redditch won the match 1-0 courtesy of Ryan Wollacott’s late header.
