Redditch veterans breakfast club continues to serve its community

Redditch Editorial 8th Sep, 2023   0

A BREAKFAST club for veterans and allies in Redditch is celebrating a successful first few months as it continues to make efforts to provide a meeting place for former soldiers, their friends and families.

Redditch Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast club (AFVBC) marked its third month on Saturday with talks from Nicki Farnes from the Poppy Appeal and John Webb, a former Royal Engineer turned Royal British Legion ambassador and emotive speaker from Foot Soldiers.

Over 65 people attended the event including Redditch Borough Councillors, Sid Khan and Lucy Harrison, new AFVBC team member, Wigg Smith and new club sponsor Tom Blewett from Pro-Drive, a driving recruitment agency.

Redditch AFVBC, started by former veterans Nick Walker and James Shobolt, is now looking forward to its Remembrance dinner dance on November 11, a coach trip to the National War Memorial in April 2024 and a families day with a dad’s army night to commemorate D-Day’s 80th anniversary.

Nick Walker said: “We had the delightful Nicki and John gave us a very emotive and inspirational talk on his very difficult and challenging life experiences and how the RBL helped turn it around.

“The room was silent for 10 minutes and several wet eyes were spotted around the room.

“All in all a fantastic day was had by everyone.

“If you know any veteran’s from the local area please check us out or point them in our direction.”

John Webb said: “Thanks to Nick and James at the AFVBC for giving me an opportunity to tell my story.

“Telling my story gives me a chance to showcase the organisations which have helped me.

“My message is encouraging positivity through adversity.

“If my talk moves people and helps them I’m grateful.”

Pete Martin, founder of the Redditch Self Defence charity, remains as a sponsor of the club after helping fund banners to promote the breakfast mornings.
