Redditch Walk of Witness gathers followers around the town centre

THE Good Friday Walk of Witness around Redditch town centre brought the crowds out to observe, listen, and reflect.

Organised by the Reverend Steve Levett, chair of the Redditch Churches Together group, the walkers assembled at the Baptist Church on Easemore Road before setting off on a route, carry a cross, which took in Heart of Worcestershire College, Mercian Square, the Town Hall and Kingfisher Shopping Centre before halting outside St Stephen’s Church.

Along the way there were readings from local church leaders while followers handed out hot crossed buns and palm crosses, which had come via Redditch’s twin town of Mtwara in Tanzania, to passersby.

Before setting off the Rev Levett had told walkers: “We are together, but let’s be outward looking – if people are interested give them a cross and welcome them all.”

Easter is the most significant time in the Christian calendar, the walk on Good Friday reliving the steps taken by Jesus as he carried his cross on his way to the crucifixion. Easter Sunday marks his resurrection.
