Redditch Walking Rugby makes triumphant return thanks to partnership

Redditch Editorial 10th Nov, 2023   0

THE WALKING Rugby programme is coming back to Redditch, bigger and better than ever before.

The free, touch Rugby style sessions return from today (Friday November 10), at Abbey Stadium and will run every week from 10.30am for the foreseeable future.

The return of Walking Rugby has been made possible through a collaboration between Redditch Borough Council’s Sports Development Team, the Worcester Warriors Foundation which is providing a dedicated coach to lead the sessions and Rubicon Leisure is providing the venue.

This partnership ensures individuals of all ages and abilities can enjoy the sport they love in a friendly and welcoming environment for absolutely no cost.

Walking Rugby is a modified version of the much-loved game, designed to be more accessible and inclusive.

Participants do not engage in tackling but instead touch or tag their opponents.

This gentle approach to the sport offers an opportunity for people to stay active and engaged with rugby, making it both a great workout and an excellent way to connect with others who share a passion for the game.

Redditch Borough Council’s portfolio holder for leisure, Coun Joanne Beecham, said walking rugby aligned perfectly with the authority’s commitment to promoting a healthy community.

“We’re grateful for the Worcester Warriors Foundation and Rubicon Leisure for their continued support in making this program accessible to all.”

The Worcester Warriors Foundation has been integral in bringing Walking Rugby back to the community.

A representative from the Foundation said: “We are proud to support and provide coaching for Walking Rugby in Redditch, ensuring that more people have access to this wonderful sport.

“It’s not just about playing rugby – it’s about building relationships and having fun together.”

Rubicon Leisure managing director, Ben Clawson-Chan, said: “We’re delighted to work in partnership with Worcester Warriors Foundation and Redditch Borough Council to provide a welcoming and practical space for Walking Rugby.

“At Rubicon Leisure, we’re committed to fostering a sense of camaraderie among our users, as well as providing a variety of options for healthy living, and this initiative is a perfect embodiment of that vision.”
