A REDDITCH woman is making a big splash by swimming 44 miles – the equivalent of going to France and back – to raise cash for Diabetes UK.
Sarah Pitts, from Greenlands, is taking part in the Swimm22 challenge, starting today (Friday, March 22) and finishing on June 22.
The fund-raiser was launched by Diabetes UK – not only to raise cash for the charity, but inspire people to git into fitness.
People can choose to swim 11, 22 or 44 miles over 12 weeks – at their own pace.
Sarah started swimming last September in the hopes of getting fitter, and decided to push herself to fund-raise while on her fitness journey.
She said: “I’ve been doing all my swims at Bromsgrove Hotel and Spa, which has been really helpful.
“They’re set up a stand to help me fundraise, and have been giving me loads of encouragement.
“Having seen my close friend struggling for many years and knowing one of my friend’s collapsed at work last year, plus seeing many whilst working in NHS, I feel this year I can try and make a difference.
“As many as 5million people are living with diabetes in the UK right now.
“So, I’m swimming towards a healthier me and a better future for people living with diabetes.”
So far Sarah has raised more than £500 of her £1,000 target.
She added: “I’ve had loads of support from the Redditch community, and several businesses have got in touch.
“I just want to make sure I can raise as much money as possible.”
