IN the lead-up to her 50th birthday, a Redditch woman is cycling from Milan to Venice – more than 270km – as part of a ‘five-decade challenge’.

Julie Rae will complete five challenges in aid of various charities before the end of 2019.

She said: “Last year I decided I was going to help others by doing something different for my birthday.

“Challenge one will be the three-day cycle in May.

“It’s going to be really tough but I’m feeling physically ready for it.

“I train three to four times each week just to make sure I maintain my fitness.”

The mum of three says the biggest test will be with her mental strength as she needs to cycle for up to 70 miles each day to stay on target for reaching Venice.

She will raising money for ‘Women v Cancer’ which donates money to breast, cervical and ovarian cancer charities.

Her second challenge will come in July, just before her 50th birthday, when she will tackle a 100km ultra challenge in the Peak District in aid of Help for Heroes.

In September Julie will take on the Great North Run in aid of Redditch Home Start and also a 10km swim in the River Dart.

Her last challenge is not physical but involves a lot of preparation.

“I have tasked myself with setting up a winter ball in aid of Midlands Air Ambulance,” said Julie, from Walkwood.

“It’s where I will reveal how much I have made throughout the year.”
