Redditch youngster rewarded for his kindness and quick-thinking

A QUICK-thinking Redditch lad who helped a lady in need has been recognised this week at the 2017 Young Good Citizen Awards.

11 year-old Ben Edwards, who lives in Woodrow, was on his way to the shops at the Winyates Centre with two of his friends back in June when they noticed a lady in need of assistance.

She had taken a tumble and was bleeding from her nose, and as adults walked by, the youngsters came to her aid, first trying to help her and then Ben called for an ambulance.

The Woodfield Academy pupil was praised on social media for his actions at the time and last Thursday (October 19) the youngster was invited to Police Headquarters at Hindlip Hall.

Ben was among nine other inspirational young people aged between six and 16 from Hereford, Shropshire, North and South Worcestershire.

The youngsters were awarded for overcoming challenges in their own lives while still making a difference to others in their community.

Chief Inspector James Baker, who presented the awards said: “Every year, I am inspired to see the incredible lengths young people go to. They are a positive force; and that’s why I feel so passionate about this opportunity to recognise and reward them.

“By celebrating their success; supporting and recognising those who are making a difference, I hope that we can give every young person the motivation to make their mark in society: improving their local area and making the best possible start to adult life.

“The awards are a chance to give young people the recognition they richly deserve and to say a huge thank you for all their hard work.”

Police and Crime Commissioner, John Campion added: “These young people make such a valuable contribution to our communities, and it is important that we celebrate them.

“Their hard work and dedication is inspiring and I’m sure they will grow to play important roles in society as adults. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them on behalf of the public.”

West Mercia Police launched the search for Young Good Citizen of 2017 in May and individual and group nominations were received from Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs), schools, youth leaders and members of the public.

Of those nominated – ten finalists (two from each policing area) were selected, and Ben, alongside the others, received a Young Good Citizen certificate and £50 Amazon voucher.
