GREEN-fingered children at Abbeywood First School RSA Academy have been growing sunflowers donated by a local charity.

Church Hill Big Local donated sunflower saplings to the school in May.

The youngsters was tasked with nurturing and growing the plants to be in with a chance of winning £50 worth of gardening vouchers for their class.

Chris Thomas and Wendy Johnson, of Church Hill Big Local, visited the school as the youngsters displayed their flowers in a school assembly as the competition drew to a close and the class with the biggest, tallest plants were named the winners.

Two classes shared the prize, donated by the Church Hill Big Local Partnership project.

Rosie Pretty, science co-ordinator at the school said: “All the classes joined in the sunflower challenge and we had great fun growing them. It has really inspired us to grow more things together. The joint winners were delighted with their gardening vouchers.”
