REDDITCH’S Abbey Stadium is closed until further notice after a major problem with the fire detection system.
Rubicon Leisure, which operates the centre, said, although the system had been maintained routinely, it had malfunctioned.
The decision to shut the centre was taken on safety grounds.
Simon Ingyon, Rubicon Leisure’s managing director, added: “After careful consideration and after assessing the associated risks involved we have decided to take this decision to act responsibly and prioritise the safety of our customers and staff.
“Rubicon Leisure is working behind the scenes to arrange for a new fire detection system to be installed as quickly as possible.
“Once this is in place we can re-open.
“We will endeavour to keep our customers informed of developments and apologise to our members, users, clubs and organisations who use our facility.
He thanked centre users for their understanding and urged them to follow Rubicon Leisure’s social media and web platforms for updates.
