A REDDITCH man has been chosen to ride in a prestigious charity horse race later this year – despite his limited riding experience.
Brett Williams of Crabbs Cross is one of just 12 people chosen for the Ride of Their Lives horse race at York racecourse in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care, and even though he has only raced a couple of times before in his life, he is raring to go.
“I have ridden in two amateur races before – around 15 years ago so this is very much a new thing for me. I’m trying extremely hard to ensure I’m fully fit to do my horse and supporters justice,” he said.
On June 17, freelance broadcaster Brett will head up to York for the one mile, one furlong race with 11 other riders, all from different backgrounds with varying levels of experience, all raising money for charity.
So far, Brett has managed to raise £2,518 but there is still plenty of work to be done before he hits his £10,000 target.
“I’ve been doing plenty of running, cycling, riding out, various leg exercises and working on the equisizer – but I’m under no illusions there is still plenty to work on,” he said.
“One in two people are affected by cancer in some way or another so I think this is a cause worth supporting. If I can raise a few quid and allow people the chance to have a good laugh at my ‘unique’ riding style, then so be it.
“I’m very proud and feel privileged to Macmillan and have some fun riding around the Knavesmire at the same time.”
The charity race is heading towards its 47th year and is the biggest single fund raising event in the Macmillan calendar.
Robyn Mountain Wade from Macmillan said: “The months of training and fundraising which all the riders put themselves through is inspirational. Their hard work makes a real difference – money raised helps fund Macmillan services, which are there to support people affected by cancer. We’re looking forward to the 2017 event, and we’re delighted to have the continued, generous support of Best Western Hotels and York Racecourse.”
