REDDITCH’S Ron Gallivan of the Mercian Military History Society will be taking a trip to the Droitwich History & Archaeology Society to deliver a talk on ‘Admiral Lancaster – Elizabethan Admiral or Pirate’.
Born in the reign of Queen Mary, back in the 16th Century, James Lancaster’s first great voyage was to the East Indies in an era of swashbuckling piracy and privateers as England strived to establish itself in a world dominated by the Spanish and Portuguese.
Lancaster’s career influenced the foundation of the East India Company and after a colourful career he was knighted by the newly-crowned King James who came to the throne after the death of Elizabeth 1 in 1603.
Ron’s talk is on Wednesday, January 4 at 7.30pm in the John Corbett Room, Droitwich Community Hall, Heritage Way, Droitwich, WR9 8RE.
Entry is £2 for members and £4 for friends and visitors.
