A REDDITCH woman is running the Birmingham Half Marathon in memory of one of the town’s most loved icons who sadly died last month.
Sandra Murrell, from Webheath, will be dedicating her 13-mile stretch to Ida Parkinson who died from cancer on August 25. Sandra built a close relationship with after after working with her for two years at the Redditch and District Macmillan Committee where she was president. Sandra will be raising money for the same cause on Sunday, October 16 to pay tribute to the woman who was the first Macmillan nurse in Redditch and had ‘the biggest heart’.
Sandra said: “in the time I knew Ida i found her to be a kind, thoughtful, giving lady with a big heart which she made room in for everyone she met.
“I often had nice chats with her and met her for coffee and she often called and we would see each other at meals. Consequently, I was gutted to learn of her passing.”
Sandra started running in January this year and raised cash for the same cause in memory of her grandmother who also sadly passed away from cancer last year.
She asked Ida’s three daughters Alison, Melanie and Wendy if she could dedicate this run to their mother and they were happy to give her their blessing.
“I realise this is a charity that many are passionate about as so many lives have been affected by cancer.
“I know Ida was very well thought of throughout the community and touched the lives of many local residents with her selfless attitude and commitment to caring.”
