Reel memories of Redditch come flooding back

THE demolition of the former Gaumont Cinema in Church Road brought the memories flooding back for one Redditch resident.

Brenda Sealey (nee Hemming) was a member of the Saturday morning Gaumont Club for young film goers.

She popped into our office on Church Green to show us a photograph of a group of club members handing over bouquets of flowers to brighten up The Gables Nursing Home on Birchfield Road back in 1953.

“We always used to go to the Saturday club at the Gaumont – I can’t remember any of the films we saw but I think it was about 6d to get in,” said Brenda, who has lived in Redditch nearly all her life.

“I think the flowers I’m holding are Michaelmas Daisies from our garden.”

The Gaumont was a popular night out for local folk and in its heyday attracted a loyal and regular following.

It was easy to get to as well with a row of bus stops along Church Road.

After it closed the building had a chequered history, ending its days as the Arena Night Club before it too closed.

Now, with the site cleared the land will be transformed into a four floor apartment block with 27 flats and 17 parking spaces.
