WEST MIDLANDS Ambulance Service (WMAS) is celebrating apprentices who have been employed by the trust this National Apprenticeship Week.

WMAS has employed nearly 4,000 apprentices who have all been celebrated this week.

The scheme was first introduced in 2010 and the trust was one of the first to be approved as an Apprenticeship Main Training Provider with the Education and Skills Funding Agency for Higher Level Apprenticeships.

Since then the service has seen a total of 3,977 apprentices.

It remains the most productive organisation in the region with the largest amount of student paramedic registered apprentices.

Director of People, Carla Beechey said: “Apprenticeships are central to assist the trust to build our future workforce.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in supporting our apprenticeship schemes and assisting with the development of our staff.”

In October 2012, the trust introduced its Non-Emergency Patient Transport Scheme.

Since then it has welcomed 289 apprentices into the programme.

Many apprentices have advanced to secure permanent positions within the trust.

These positions include paramedics, technicians, advancing through the student paramedic pathway, and staff training.

Education and apprenticeship manager, Sophie Cooper said: “We’re so proud of all of our past and present apprentices and it’s so exciting to take the opportunity on National Apprenticeship

Week to highlight their hard work, and the development opportunities that we have on offer within the Trust.”

National Apprenticeship Week began on Monday and runs until Sunday, February 11.
