Residents demand action over 'drug problems' in St George's area

Redditch Editorial 20th Sep, 2019   0

RESIDENTS say they are increasingly concerned about ongoing drug problems near Grange Road in the St George’s area of Redditch.

According to one resident dealers have been spotted occupying a nearby car park from around 5.30pm through to midnight during the weekend and sometimes in the week too.

He said: “We feel scared, intimated and have been to the police numerous times because we’re afraid one day someone is going to get killed.

“But we’re fed up of reporting the crimes and nothing being done about it, these drug dealers are still there in our faces.

“We have children and young families in this community – we pay our council tax and we need protection but we’re not getting it.”

Residents say they have spoken to their ward Councillor Mark Shurmer (Lab, Lodge Park) about the drug issues at local PACT meetings.

He confirmed their fears, saying: “It’s been going on for some time.

“There also appears to be a council property where drug dealing is taking place.

“I have been to the police and the council about this and have been told me they are working together to reach a solution.”

Inspector Mark Chappell at Redditch Police Station said there have been historic complaints about one specific address in the area.

“This we targeted about a month ago, and since then, we have had had no further calls whatsoever,” he said.

Locals are encouraged to call 999 should they feel unsafe or to report anything of concern.
