HANBURY Wharf residents’ anguish over a ‘dangerous’ stretch of road running through the village may finally be coming to an end after a productive meeting with the county council to address speeding concerns.
Members of Hanbury Wharf Residents Association have been campaigning for better speed enforcement along the B4090 between their town and Droitwich Spa centre for almost a decade.
As well as the residents’ concerns with motorists ignoring the 40mph speed limit within the village following a national speed limit section coming from Hanbury, concerns have also been raised over misplaced speed limit signs.
Yesterday (Thursday) the association’s prayers were seemingly answered at a meeting with Worcestershire County Councillor, Marc Bayliss who has agreed to work on various measures to address the concerns along the road.
Coun Bayliss said he agreed with the concerns from residents and has vowed to liaise with West Mercia Police to set up speed enforcement operations along the road.
The county councillor will also work with a council highways liaison officer, who was also present at the meeting, to push for new ‘SLOW’ road markings and new 40mph road markers will also be pushed for.
New Vehicle Activated Speed (VAS) signs could also be placed at both ends of the stretch of road to notify motorists if they’re travelling too fast. The highways liaison officer agreed to look into the misplaced speed limit signs.
Coun Bayliss said he would also liaise with the police to set up a Community Speed Watch scheme for the residents association to be involved in.
A meeting with the residents association will be organised to work on the scheme ahead of another meeting in July where Coun Bayliss will provide an update on the progress of the new measures.
Coun Bayliss told the Standard: “It’s always great to meet residents.
“I understand their concerns and we need to do something about the road.
“I’m committed to resolving this problem.
“I look forward to meeting them again and hopefully we’ve got some concrete progress moving forward.”
Allan Bourne, a prominent campaigner and local resident said:
“I’m holding my breath but he’s listened to our concerns and I feel positive.”
The residents association secretary, Eric Hogg, added:
“It’s the first time anyone has said we could do this.
“It’s been the most constructive discussion I’ve been involved in.”
