VOLUNTEERS from Bromsgrove & Redditch Welcome Refugees joined the revolution to reduce food waste and help people in poverty on Tuesday.
Joining forces with Worcestershire Gleaning Network and Syrians who have recently settled in Redditch, they picked apples that would otherwise have been left to rot on the trees.
Picking more than two tonnes of apples on a farm near Alcester, the harvest was distributed to charities and social centres across the Midlands, helping the homeless and people on low incomes.
Organisations who benefited locally include Redditch Food Bank, the Sandycroft Centre, RYCE and The Emmanuel Church.
Alistair Waugh of BRWR said: “There really wasn’t much wrong with these apples, some were small, but a bumper crop of apples this year has meant that tonnes of fruit hasn’t been picked.
“What’s more, we spent a day at Pershore College turning the apples into juice that we’re calling ‘RefuJUICE’, which we’re selling to raise funds.”
