Roadworks, library and new road surface - This weeks Redditch Standard letters

THIS weeks Redditch Standard letters.

WELL done to Sarina Wiegman and the Lionesses for putting England in a World Cup final for the first time since 1966.

The hard work and dedication they have put in has been evident and paid off – both at last year’s Euros and in this tournament which they have grown into.

We’ll all be watching on Sunday and cheering them on when they will hopefully finish the job against Spain and bring football home, inspiring hundreds of thousands of young people in the process.

‘County councils trick’

IN A letter to the Standard on  August 11, L Jones from Greenlands said Redditch Borough Council should crack on and demolish the library because it looks a mess with all the scaffolding around it.

Well L Jones you had to be the one person that fell for Worcestershire County Council’s trick.

They erected the scaffolding so it would look eyesore and at a cost so far of £23,000 of taxpayers money.

Could L Jones be pseudonym for Matt Dormer?

‘Diabolical plans’

ALTHOUGH I am a member of The Abbey golf club I feel that the proposed plans to take away some of our club grounds and spoil the course layout is diabolical, and also believe that the development would cause serious traffic  congestion to the area.

I know with your report there has been checks on this problem but do not believe a fair assessment has been done – not only the A441 but the Hither green Lane exit and entrance at peak times will cause pandamonium to the locals and visitors to the area.

‘No news’

I HAVE an avid interest in the town, yet, apart from reading that the library project is going ahead, I wonder how we are supposed to know how plans to ‘regenerate’ Redditch are progressing for the town?

Things appear to have gone very quiet.

Additionally, the website has no minute of any meetings held in 2023: ‘Latest News’ contains no news.

£15.6million pounds was awarded. – when will work to use this money begin?

Surely our local paper – via information supplied from the council – ought to keep us informed?

A Redditch resident

EDITOR’S NOTE – We are keeping tabs on the library and town centre development situations and are regularly quizzing the councils for updates. We will be sure to bring you the latest news as and when they occur.

‘Devastating impact’

I AM writing to highlight the proposed closure of rail ticket offices that will have a devastating impact on blind and partially sighted people’s ability to travel independently – stopping people getting to work, healthcare appointments, and seeing friends.

Ticket offices are not just about selling tickets.

They provide a reliable first point of contact for many kinds of staff assistance such as arranging sighted guidance through the station and safely on to the train, to advising on any changes to journeys.

Modernisation of our railways doesn’t just mean apps and touchscreens – modernisation means inclusivity and not leaving anyone behind. These proposals must be scrapped.

‘What about pedestrians’

WELL thank goodness cars with their air filled suspension and shock absorbers can now travel smoothly over about 300 metres of newly laid tarmac on the Studley Road.

But what about the pedestrians?

We still have to negotiate a bumpy pavement on both sides of the road filled with bulging tree roots, dug up and badly repaired utility works and uneven surfaces.

Why is it that cars get a lovely new road surface while pedestrians are left to stumble and trip over disgraceful footpaths?

I gather the man in charge of transport at Worcestershire County Council is a Redditch councillor, well he should try walking along the pavement on the Studley Road – it’s a disgrace.

Once again walkers are treated as second class citizens while the great god car is allowed to go smoothly by.

It’s about time the people in power started to put pedestrians first.

‘Roadworks plaguing journey’

ROADWORKS have been plaguing every journey I’ve travelled for the last couple of weeks.

I’m sick and tired of having to follow ridiculously long diversion signs, wasting fuel and adding at least 10 minutes to my journey times.

I wake up this morning to find they are now 100 yards from my front door.

I’ve driven through Redditch, Studley, Wythall, Solihull and parts of Bromsgrove in the last week and every town or village has road closed signs, diversions or you sit through miles and miles or backlogs.

I realise that the work has to be done, but do they have to do it all at once? It seems one road opens and they decide to close another.

Are the workers unable to talk to each other and space out the road closures throughout the summer holidays? Or do they realise they haven’t done the work they needed to and cram it all in the last few weeks?

J Smith,

Studley
