Roman Alcester Heritage Museum to toast its 20th anniversary with a community day

A LEGION of fun is being promised at the Roman Alcester Heritage Museum, when it celebrates its 20th anniversary with a community day on July 6.

Visitors young and old are being encouraged to dress up as a Roman and there are plenty of things to see and do including meeting Roman soldiers, making crafty Roman creations to take home, play Roman-style games and decorate a Roman temple.

There is a special Roman-themed photographic display of Royal Shakespeare Company productions past and present and an opportunity to get your archaeological finds assessed by an expert from Warwickshire Museum Service between 11am and 2pm.

Susan Juned, chair of Roman Alcester Heritage Centre, said: “As a volunteer-led independent organisation we have been incredibly fortunate to have enjoyed such support over the years.

“The emphasis of the museum has always been about the community, right from the displays of Alcester’s amazing Roman heritage expertly guided by Warwickshire Museum Service to the organisation of fun, educational school trips and the day-to-day commitment of our dedicated volunteers.

“We owe them all a huge debt of thanks.”

There is also a display of more than 50 decorated Roman shields which have been made by local school pupils and organisations.

Museum trustees are also hosting a special thank you event to invited guests and supporters on the evening of July 2 at the centre.

Alcester is one of the most investigated Roman small towns in the country, with more than 100 archaeological digs in the past 80 years. The museum displays many objects discovered in these digs and sets out what life was like in Roman times between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.

The July 6 event is free to enter and runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
